Harry J. Buncke established a clinical service and microsurgical research laboratory at what is now the CPMC-Davies Campus in San Francisco, California. During that time, he performed the world’s first microvascular transplant, followed soon after by the first human toe-to-thumb transplantation in the United States. These groundbreaking achievements—and many other pioneering innovations—led surgeons from around the globe to seek training with Dr. Buncke, completing one-year fellowships in his program. Since then, The Buncke Clinic has remained a world leader in hand, microsurgery, and plastic surgical reconstruction.
Our mission is to provide the most advanced microsurgical care available anywhere in the world. We are closely affiliated with the California Pacific Medical Center, Davies Campus, in San Francisco, and our surgeons also have affiliations with both Stanford and UCSF. Microsurgery has been performed at this location for over 50 years, ever since Dr. Buncke—widely recognized as the Father of Microsurgery—founded the clinic.
