What is microvascular surgery?

Pioneered at The Buncke Clinic:

Microvascular surgery is vascular surgery as small blood vessels requiring an operating microscope and specialized techniques performed by a microsurgery.

The microsurgery service at The Buncke Clinic began in 1970 after Harry Buncke took delivery of the second operating diploscope in North America. We pioneered microsurgery right here in San Francisco starting with Harry Buncke's work and continuing today with the most advanced microsurgical techniques available.

Here is a list of some the microvascular procedures we do. It gives you an idea of the breadth of the specialty, and the value it has in treating conditions from head to toe:

  • Ischemic hand
  • Buerger's disease
  • Replantation
  • Vascular insufficiency of the hand
  • Digital Sympathectomy (Scleroderma, Raynaud's)
  • Venous and arterial malformations
  • Aneurysms of the hand and forearm
  • Hypothenar hammer syndrome
